Panasonic MEGTRON laminates are on allocation, and lead times for some grades have stretched to 20 weeks or more. Stock is becoming difficult and costly to secure. Anyone with these requirements should get orders in NOW.
Unobtainium (or unobtanium) is a term used in engineering, science fiction, and everyday conversation to describe a material that is ideal for a specific purpose, but practically impossible or impractically difficult to get.
MEGTRON is Panasonic’s branded family of high-performance, low-transmission-loss printed circuit board (PCB) materials. They are engineered for high-speed digital circuits, AI servers, cloud data centers, 5G and next-generation networking gear, routers, switches, and other high-speed systems where signal integrity is critical.
Megtron materials (such as Megtron 4, 6, 7, and 8) are critical high-speed, low-loss circuit board (PCB) materials. Because these materials are an industry standard for high-speed digital designs, today’s supply squeeze can severely disrupt production timelines, especially for advanced electronics, server hardware, and telecommunications equipment.
Why It’s Happening
Demand for AI servers and high-speed networking has outpaced the supply of specialty glass cloth, resin, and copper foil these laminates require. Industry reports put lead times for advanced laminates at 20 weeks or more, with further price increases expected. Panasonic has announced new MEGTRON capacity, but its next major production line is not scheduled to begin operation until April 2027.
Supply tightened further on November 4, 2026, when an explosion and fire struck Panasonic’s materials plant in Hsinchu, Taiwan, one of only five Panasonic sites that make these multilayer circuit board materials. The cause, the extent of the damage, and the recovery timeline have not yet been announced. In a market that is already on allocation, any lost capacity is likely to lengthen lead times and add price pressure.

If you are facing a sudden supply squeeze or skyrocketing costs, you need to act immediately to secure your pipeline or qualify functional alternatives.
Immediate Action Plan
- Review Your PCB Fabrication Files: Pull the fab drawings and stackups for all active and upcoming designs to identify which boards specify Megtron laminates.
- Secure Current Stock: Contact your regular PCB fabricators and distributors immediately to lock in available inventory and material allocations before lead times stretch further.
- Evaluate Cross-Compatible Alternatives: If Megtron lead times or costs don’t fit your schedule, look into qualified high-speed, low-loss alternatives from other major laminators. Contact our MaRCTech2 team for assistance.
To help tailor specific advice or suggest precise material alternatives, please tell us:
- Which specific grade of Megtron (e.g., Megtron 6, Megtron 7) do your designs require?
- The critical performance metrics for your project (e.g., specific Df/Dk values, layer count, or operating frequencies)?
- Additional questions to consider:
- What are the complete laminate and prepreg part numbers, including suffixes?
- What core thickness, prepreg glass styles, and resin contents are specified?
- What copper weights and foil types are required?
- Is the construction entirely of one material system, or does it use different materials on different layers?
- Which requirements are mandatory, and which are preferences inherited from an earlier design?
Plan Ahead. Keep Production Moving
MEGTRON supply constraints make early planning essential. Reviewing your material requirements, confirming availability, and evaluating potential alternatives now can help reduce the risk of costly production delays.
